Mavericks Beat Spurs to Grab First Place

The reigning NBA champion Dallas Mavericks seized sole possession of first place by beating their state rivals the San Antonio Spurs 101-100 behind guard Jason Terry's superb 34-point game.

Germany's Dirk Nowitzki returned to the lineup Sunday and scored 10 points for the Mavericks who were coming off an impressive 116-101 win over Utah two days ago.

Nowitzki missed four games with a sore right knee and looked rusty at times Sunday.

He shot a disappointing five-of-14 from the field but had 13 rebounds for Dallas who won their fifth game in the past six.

Gary Neal scored 19 points for the Spurs who continue to struggle away from home.

The Spurs sat their starters for the fourth quarter as their final 55 points came from players coming off the bench.
