Berri Says Won’t Participate in New Govt. if Miqati Concedes to Aoun

Sources have ruled out the possibility of Prime Minsiter-designate Najib Miqati stepping down in case an agreement isn’t reached.

They told al-Akhbar newspaper, in remarks published Wednesday, that “the French and the Americans don’t want Miqati to step down,” and that “he can’t take this decision on his own.”

The sources added that Speaker Nabih Berri is also urging Miqati to proceed with the consultations.

“Berri warned Miqati against giving (President Michel) Aoun and (FPM chief Jebran) Bassil what they want, or else his party will not participate in the new government,” a position that al-Marada leader Suleiman Franjieh has also conveyed to Miqati, the sources said.
