Suleiman Reiterates Efficiency and Seniority Should be Base of All Appointments

President Michel Suleiman stressed Thursday on the “mechanism which was adopted in the administrative appointments,”

He asserted that “PM Najib Miqati agrees with him and is fully committed to this mechanism.”

President Michel Suleiman on Thursday held onto the appointment of efficient people to posts in state institutions away from favoritism.

“I hold onto the seniority, efficiency and competence in the appointments at all levels,” Suleiman said on twitter.

“It is not important that one, two, or three cabinet meetings do not occur. What is importance is the competency in the appointments,” Suleiman said later at night on New TV.

He asked the “ministers who are stalling in submitting the names which they have to the civil service to hasten because they are the ones who are obstructing the appointments and not the President.

Suleiman had already tweeted that the appointments of civil servants should be made “away from favoritism.”

His tweet came a day after the cabinet entered a deadlock over Premier Najib Miqati’s decision to end a government session over differences with ministers loyal to Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun on the appointments.

Suleiman said on twitter on Wednesday that “the ball of appointments is in the court of ministers and I disagree with the justice minister on the head of the Higher Judicial Council.”

Justice Minister Shakib Qortbawi, who is loyal to Aoun, has proposed Judge Tannous Meshleb to head the HJC.

Suleiman and Aoun have been bickering for months on the post because the president is backing Judge Alice Shabtini to head the Council.

He argued that Shabtini is more efficient but Aoun stresses that she has a limited time in office before she retires.
