Sade Tops British Music Earnings in U.S.

The soul-jazz singer Sade had the biggest U.S. earnings of any British musician last year with $16.4 million, beating multi-Grammy-winning sensation Adele.

Nigerian-born Sade, 53, who shot to fame in the 1980s and is best known for "Smooth Operator", came sixth out of all the musicians in the 2011 annual rankings by industry paper Billboard, released on Monday.

She toured the U.S., Europe, Australia and South America with her band last year.

Soul diva Adele, 23, made 10th spot with earnings of $13.1 million.

"Adele made a top 10 showing despite vocal cord problems limiting her ability to perform publicly before she was forced to cancel 10 sold-out U.S. dates in the fall," noted Billboard in its sixth annual Money Makers rankings.

U.S. country star Taylor Swift racked up the highest earnings of all during the year -- banking $35.7 million from all sources of U.S. income including touring and music sales -- followed by Irish rockers U2 with $32.1 million.

This included north American revenues from their monumental two-year "360 degree Tour," which ended in July last year.

Other big names in the Billboard top 40 earners include Elton John in 13th place with $12 million, a whisker ahead of Katy Perry at 14. The Beatles made no 24 after the Fab Four's catalogue finally became available on iTunes.
