Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat demanded on Friday that the ruling Assad family in Syria be removed from the country.
He said: “Anyone who believes that a settlement can be reached with the Assad family is crazy.”
He made his remarks from Turkey where he is taking part in a series of meetings for Socialist International in the Arab world.
Addressing the international community, the MP remarked: “If Russia truly wants the best interests of the Syrian people, then it would transport the Assad family to somewhere in Russia or elsewhere and leave the Syrian people to decide their fate with freedom and dignity.”
Jumblat noted that Russia had assisted Syria in constructing the Euphrates dam, presented it with thousands of academic scholarships, and supported it militarily and developmentally, and it should therefore launch a political initiative with the concerned sides to end the country’s crisis.
The PSP leader had previously warned that Syria may slip into civil war if the bloodshed continued.
Russia and China have twice opposed a United Nations Security Council resolution to condemn the violence in Syria, rejecting any form of foreign intervention to end the crisis.
The Syrian regime has been launching a violent crackdown against demonstrators who have been demanding an end to the regime and the rule of President Bashar Assad.
The United Nations estimates that over 9,000 people have been killed in the violence since the beginning of the protests in March 2011.
