March 14 to Tackle Telecom Data Controversy at General Parliamentary Sessions
The March 14 forces MPs are expected to discuss the telecom data during the general parliamentary sessions set to assess the cabinet’s performance on April 17-19, the pan-Arab daily al-Hayat reported on Monday.
According to the daily, Telecommunications Minister Nicolas Sehnaoui will be questioned about preventing the security authorities from obtaining the telecom data.
The controversial telecom data dispute emerged again after Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea escaped an assassination attempt last week.
The March 14 sources said that Sehnaoui insists on security authorities to submit a request at the wiretapping control center, which was established last year at the Telecommunications Ministry, in order to obtain the telecom data.
However, the sources noted that the minister’s decision contradicts the law which states that only the competent judicial authority can decide on the matter.
Sehnaoui refuses to provide security services with telephone communications information to protect people’s privacy.
In January, leaks of an alleged plot to assassinate a high-level security official, including head of the Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau Col. Wissam al-Hassan, highlighted the issue of telecom data.
The data usually includes the location of a caller and his movements, which Sehnaoui argues invades people’s liberties.
