Israel Concerned Syrian Arms Falling in Hizbullah Hands

Israeli officials are concerned about reports that Hizbullah is putting its hands on Syrian arms, though it is still unclear whether the Lebanese party has gotten hold of chemical weapons, Israeli daily Haaretz reported on Tuesday.

The newspaper quoted Israeli officials as saying that it remains unclear how far Washington will go to help bring about the downfall of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

They said Syria might become a failed state if the unrest continues, with Hizbullah and Iran on one side and al-Qaida-inspired Sunnis on the other consolidating footholds.

According to Haaretz, there is consensus in the Israeli intelligence community that Assad sooner or later will be ousted.

"Assad is past the point of no return," a senior cabinet minister said. "He won't be able to restore his position as Syria's undisputed leader.

“Resistance is growing, even in Damascus," the Israeli minister added.
