Miqati: Britain Supports Lebanon in Policies that Lead to Stability

Prime Minister Najib Miqati said Wednesday that British Foreign Secretary William Hague announced his backing for the policies adopted by the Lebanese government to achieve stability in the country.

In remarks to As Safir newspaper, Miqati described his meeting with Hague in London on Tuesday as “very positive,” and said the Foreign Secretary stressed “support for the Lebanese government’s approach which led to internal stability at a stage that is witnessing a lot of shakeups in the region.”

London understands Lebanon’s adoption of a self-distancing policy on the Syrian crisis, the premier said.

Hague’s announcement that Britain would offer military assistance to Lebanon is a sign of British support for the country, he added.

According to Miqati, Hague asked him about the needs of the Lebanese military and the two agreed to send an invitation to Army Chief Gen. Jean Qahwaji to visit London.

According to a statement released by the PM’s press office on Tuesday, the British Foreign Secretary visited Miqati at his residence in London to discuss with him the situation in Lebanon and the region, and bilateral relations.

Hague appreciated “the wise policy adopted by the Lebanese government which helped consolidate stability in Lebanon,” it said.

Miqati is on a private visit to the British capital.
