Audeh Hopes for End of Era of Killing and Assassinations

Greek Orthodox Archbishop of Beirut Elias Audeh hoped in his Easter sermon on Sunday that the era of killing and assassinations has ended with no return.

“We reject killing and assassinations and condemn them,” Audeh said at the St. George cathedral in downtown Beirut in reference to the recent murder attempt on Lebanese Forces chief Samir Geagea.

The archbishop slammed politicians and the state for a series of scandals and incidents that rocked Lebanon lately.

He criticized the collapse of buildings, the sale of polluted water and bad milk and food, continuous power cuts, a rise in prices of fuel and embezzlement.

“We continue to suffer from divisions and war,” he lamented. “People are after money and power.”

“Hatred leads to more hatred and violence to more violence,” he said, stressing that the nation “will continue to bleed if we leave places for hatred, selfishness and interest in our hearts.”

“We should work together to come out of the current situation,” Audeh told believers and several politicians who attended the mass, including deputy Speaker Farid Makari and MP Atef Majdalani.

“When will counter-accusations end?,” he wondered, urging politicians to place the decent life of citizens at the top of their priorities.

The state is in need for a moral, cultural, political and social rise, he said, adding that this couldn’t take place unless politicians and citizens unite.
