Miqati Hopes Calm Would be Restored in Tripoli, Urges Officials to Discuss Future

Prime Minister Najib Miqati expressed optimism that calm would be restored in the northern city of Tripoli as all officials in the city are seeking to resolve the situation.

“We have passed through difficult situations but we were able to overcome them, it’s time for us to discuss the future,” Miqati told An Nahar newspaper on Friday.

The premier stressed that the officials must exert efforts to safeguard the country.

“We should discuss frankly and clearly the future of the next generations,” Miqati noted.

On Thursday, the premier chaired a security meeting at his residence in Tripoli to follow up the on the latest developments in the city.

He told the daily that the gatherers voiced their support to the security plan that was set to restore security in the city.

The meeting was held in the presence of State Minister Ahmed Karami, Youth and Sports Minister Faisal Karami, MP Mohammed Kabbara, Tripoli and the North Mufti Sheikh Malek al-Shaar and senior security officials.

The clashes in Tripoli erupted on Saturday after the General Security Department detained Islamist Shadi al-Mawlawi on charges of belonging to a terrorist group.

The city witnessed sporadic gunfire amid a fragile ceasefire.
