Miqati Chairs Security Meeting in Tripoli, Urges Stricter Measures

Prime Minister Najib Miqati chaired on Saturday a security meeting with senior officials in Tripoli to follow up the latest developments in the northern port city.

The meeting was attended by Finance Minister Mohammed al-Safade, State Minister Ahmed Karami, Youth and Sports Minister Faisal Karami, MP Mohammed Kabbara, head of the Lebanese Army Intelligence bureau in the north, Brigadier Amer al-Hasan, and ISF commander in Tripoli General Bassam al-Ayoubi.

The gatherers agreed on imposing strict measures in al-Qobba area, Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen and resolve the gaps to prevent any security breach.

“The army and the ISF have clear instructions to control the security situation and fortify their deployment in order to restore calm in the city,” a statement issued by the PM’s press office said.

Clashes sparked over the weekend in Tripoli between the mainly Sunni neighborhood of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Alawite Jabal Mohsen after the General Security Department detained Islamist Shadi al-Mawlawi on charges of belonging to a terrorist group.

Sectarian clashes between residents of the two districts earlier this week left 10 people dead and some 100 wounded and raised fears that the revolt in Syria could engulf its tiny neighbor.
