5 Wounded in Blaze that Engulfed Syrian Refugee Tents in Akkar

Five people were wounded on Thursday in a blaze that engulfed a number of Syrian refugee tents in Akkar, reported the National News Agency.

It said that two people suffered light burns and three people fainted in the fire that completely destroyed 20 tents in the town of Bourj al-Arab in Akkar.

The Lebanese Red Cross has since transported them to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Security forces immediately arrived at the scene to investigate the incident.

Initial reports said that the blaze was caused by a gas leak.

Syrian refugees have flooded Lebanon since the eruption of anti-regime protests in their country in March 2011.

The majority of them have sought refuge in the North and the Bekaa.

The UNHCR estimates that there are some 26,000 refugees spread throughout Lebanon.
