Tripoli Ceasefire Disturbed by Sniper Activity

The northern city of Tripoli witnessed security violations on Saturday as mild sniper activity renewed in breach of the ceasefire while the army remained deployed in the city.

The National News Agency reported that a child was slightly wounded in sniper gunshots in Bab al-Tabbaneh.

Hussein Daher was transferred to the Islamic hospital in Tripoli.

LBC said that another citizen was injured by sniper gunshots in al-Hara al-Jadeeda in Jabal Mohsen.

Meanwhile, OTV said a grenade was tossed in Syria Street which separates the rival Tripoli neighborhoods of mostly Sunni Bab al-Tabbaneh and mainly Alawite Jabal Mohsen.

Earlier on Saturday, the NNA said that a hand grenade was tossed at 11:30 a.m. near a central office in Bab al-Tabbaneh but no-one was injured.

Clashes between the pro- and anti-Syrian regime neighborhoods recently left 14 people dead and 48 wounded, sparking fears of a spillover of the conflict in neighboring Syria.

Sectarian violence has flared several times in Tripoli since the revolt broke out in Syria in March of last year, including street battles in May that left 10 dead.

Bab al-Tebbaneh and Jabal Mohsen have been gripped by frequent fighting, reflecting a split between Lebanon's parties where the opposition backs the revolt in Syria while a ruling coalition supports the Damascus regime.
