Jumblat Praises Egyptian Revolution’s Achievement: New President Faces Many Challenges

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat said Monday that “the challenges facing the new Egyptian president are many,” adding that the victory of Mohammed Morsi as Egypt’s president is a “gradual progress towards strengthening the achievements of the revolution which led to the uprooting of dictatorship, and paving the way for democracy.”

In his weekly editorial in the PSP-affiliated al-Anbaa magazine, Jumblat said that the Egyptian president faces many challenges to develop the country and its people “including the installation of the emerging democratic system and expanding the base of political participation, as well as economic challenges in terms of fighting against poverty and illiteracy.”

PSP leader stated that the “Egyptian official institutions, especially the judiciary, have proven themselves once again by staying away from political and sectarian conflicts,” adding that “the judiciary which conducted the historic trial of former President Hosni Mubarak and some associates, and the presidential election commission which oversaw the elections, in addition to many other institutions proved its responsibility and ability to keep up with challenges involved.”

“The Egyptians proved that they are committed to the decisions of the institutions, reflecting their high culture and consciousness,” Jumblat added, pointing out that the Egyptian people “do not surrender easily no matter how complicated the problems get.”
