Olympic Flame Takes a Ride On The London Eye

The Olympic flame has had a ride on the London Eye.

Amelia Hempleman-Adams took the torch on a trip on the giant observation wheel on the south side of the River Thames on Sunday, riding atop one of the Eye's viewing capsules as it slowing rotated.

The 17-year-old Hempleman-Adams was the youngest person to ski to the South Pole last year.

The Olympic flame is continuing its weeklong journey around London, after spending more than 60 days touring Britain.

Organizers want the flame — and the spirit of the games — to reach as many neighborhoods as possible in the 8,000-mile (12,875 kilometers) torch relay.

Champion athletes, children, soldiers and people from all walks of life have taken turns carrying the flame. On Saturday, the torchbearers included legendary Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci and English singer Paloma Faith, who ran with the torch in eye-catching red high heels.

The relay will end Friday, when the last torchbearer lights the cauldron at the opening ceremony in the Olympic Stadium to mark the official start of the games.
