SCC Says Miqati Advised Suspension of Official Exams Correction if Demands Not Met

Head of Association of Public Secondary School Education Teachers Hanna Gharib criticized on Thursday Prime Minister Najib Miqati, revealing that the premier advised the Syndicate Coordination Committee to suspend the correction of the official exams if their demands were not carried out.

During one of the negotiation meetings with Miqati “he advised us to suspend the correction of the official exams if there was any delay in carrying out our demands,” Gharib told As Safir newspaper.

“When he backed down on carrying out his part of the agreement, we did our part by suspending the correction.”

He lashed out at Miqati for accusing the SCC of undermining the state authority, saying: “It happens when the government fails to meet its promises.”

Gharib told the daily that the premier “says something and does something else.”

He stressed that the SCC will continue its escalatory measures until our demands are met.

Miqati said on Wednesday during the cabinet session held at the Grand Serail “people have the right to express their demands when allowed by law,” hinting that the SCC is violating article 15 of the Labor law, which prevents public employees from striking and intentionally halting the performance of their public services.

“We cannot accept threats to social and financial stability and exhaust the treasury with additional burdens; we refuse to yield to any street action,” Miqati pointed out.

Economy and Trade Minister Nicolas Nahhas told Voice of Lebanon radio (100.5) that the “cabinet isn’t delaying the new wages scale.”

“The protests by the SCC indicate that those behind it are carrying them out for other purposes,” the minister added.

According to al-Liwaa newspaper, the cabinet will meet on August 2 at the Grand Serail to approve the new salaries scale as a whole.
