Miqati Urges Rival Camps to Cooperate on Defense Strategy, Curb Political Tension

Prime Minister Najib Miqati on Thursday called on the ruling coalition and the opposition to contribute to devising a national defense strategy that would “protect the country’s unity and defend it against the domestic and external threats.”

Defending his government’s so-called “self-disassociation policy” towards the Syrian crisis, Miqati described it as “the correct choice to spare Lebanon the inferno of regional conflicts and to preserve our country in this troubled period.”

During an iftar banquet at the Beirut International Exhibition and Leisure Center (BIEL), the premier called on all the political parties to cooperate in order to contain the repercussions of the Syrian crisis on Lebanon, urging them to “lower the level of political tension and facilitate the work of security forces and authorities.”

Miqati stressed that his government’s stances are aimed at preserving “Lebanon’s Arab, regional and international interests.”

He also stressed that Lebanon is a “sanctuary for the refugees who flee the dangers of their brotherly Arab countries,” noting that the Lebanese society was the first to host and embrace the Syrian refugees.
