2,400 Syrians Take Shelter in East Turkey

Some 2,400 people crossed into Turkey overnight to escape the escalating violence in Syria, Turkey’s government-run news agency reported on Wednesday.

The Anadolu Agency said that the crowd included 37 Syrian army officials two of whom were generals and two colonels.

The Syrians were lead into busses under heavy security measures and brought to Reyhanlı Accomadation Residence in Hatay city, east of Turkey.

While the army officials and their families were sent off to the Aydın Camp in the city of Aydın, the rest of the Syrians were sent to Sanlıurfa, another city in the east of Turkey to lodge at different camps.

There has been a marked increase in the number of refugees fleeing to Turkey in the past two days. Officials reported 1,328 arrivals on Tuesday as rebels tried to expand their hold inside Aleppo, Syria's largest city, close to the border.

Some 50,000 Syrians have now found refuge in Turkey, which has served as a staging ground for rebels fighting President Bashar Assad's regime. Even more refugees have crossed into Jordan and Lebanon.
