Paris Confirms U.N. Ministerial Meeting on Syria on Aug. 30

France on Wednesday confirmed the U.N. Security Council will hold a ministerial meeting on the Syria conflict on August 30 focused on the humanitarian situation in the country and its neighbors.

"Despite the divisions that have prevailed in recent months, the Security Council cannot remain silent about the tragedy being played out in Syria," French foreign ministry deputy spokesman Vincent Floreani said.

He confirmed that France, as this month's president of the Security Council, had called the meeting, which was announced by diplomatic sources on Tuesday.

The diplomats had said it was not sure whether Russia and China, which have vetoed three council resolutions on Syria, would attend. Floreani made no comment about who might participate.

"By bringing together its partners from the Security Council, France intends to show its support for the Syrian people, its increasing concern about regional stability and its commitment to a transition toward a democratic and pluralist system," he said.

He said Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, who will next week visit Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, will preside the talks.
