Miqti at OIC Summit: Any Approach besides Disassociation Policy Would Have Harmed Lebanon

Prime Minister Najib Miqati defended on Wednesday the Lebanese government’s disassociation policy, saying that it has enjoyed local and international support.

“The government’s adoption of another policy would have harmed Lebanon’s stability and security.”

The premier will make these remarks later on Wednesday during a speech at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation summit currently held in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

“Despite Lebanon’s adoption of such a policy, during this time in particular, it remains committed to its international obligations in order for it to remain an effective member of international organizations,” continued Miqati.

Lebanon chose the disassociation policy out of the government’s keenness to maintain its stability, unity of its people, and its goal to avert the repercussions of the developments in Syria, he explained.

“This policy has allowed the government to focus its attention to providing humanitarian aid to Syrian refugees based on the historic, social, and familial ties between the Lebanese and Syrian people,” he stressed.

He hoped that the Arab and Islamic leaders at the summit would understand the Lebanese government’s decision, saying that their understanding would serve as support for Lebanon to maintain its role as a “message of peace.”

Moreover, the premier said that the developments in the Arab world should not force the leaders to adopt a lax approach towards the Palestinian cause.

He warned: “The Israeli enemy is taking advantage of the situation in order to go ahead with its plans to establish new settlements and expand old ones.”
