Hizbullah Re-launches TV App on Google and Apple, Draws ADL Concerns
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) in the U.S. expressed concern about Hizbullah re-launching its smartphone al-Manar TV applications, which were previously removed by Apple and Google.
ADL was the first to report on the app, which appeared on July 25 and directs users to content from al-Manar, the Lebanon-based Hizbullah satellite television station. Apple removed the app four days later from iTune stores and Google followed two days after removing the app from Google Play.
In a statement issued Thursday blaming ADL for the failure of its previous efforts, al-Manar said the app has been rereleased for the Android operating system and is "back on iPad and iPhone applications via alternative ways, following the campaign carried out by the Jewish Anti-Defamation League to deactivate al-Manar applications on smart phones at Google Play and apple store."
Hizbullah-run al-Manar, broadcast the app on its TV and promotes the applications on its homepage, where it is possible to watch a live-stream of the station.
The U.S. Department of State included al-Manar TV station on its terrorism list in December 2004 and banned it in the United States. The station is also banned in France, Spain and Germany.
