Berri Laments Current Situation in Lebanon, Slams Absence of Political Authorities
Speaker Nabih Berri lamented on Tuesday the current state of affairs in Lebanon, slamming the “kidnappings, sniper activity, blocking of roads, and clan military wings.”
He asked in a statement: “Where is the role of the political authorities and parties regarding the latest developments?”
“Who is covering up these latest events?” he continued.
“Who has prepared all of this evil against Lebanon?” he wondered.
Berri slammed “the division of regions in Lebanon, in a country that is too small to be divided.”
“Has the country turned into a number of sectarian and factional patches?” asked the speaker.
“Don’t we realize that those who kidnapped our sons want to kidnap the whole of Lebanon?” he wondered.
“Everyone wants Lebanon for himself, but what are the Lebanese people left with?” he continued.
Should Lebanon just set up loya jirga tribal councils just like those in Afghanistan? wondered the speaker.
Addressing the Lebanese people, Berri demanded them to defend their country.
“Only the state harbors the people,” he stressed.
Eleven Lebanese pilgrims were kidnapped in the northern Syrian province of Aleppo on their way home from a pilgrimage to Iran on May 22. Conflicting reports have emerged on their fate after Syrian government forces shelled the area of Aazaz where they were being held.
Lebanese Hassan Salim al-Meqdad was allegedly kidnapped by the Free Syrian Army last week in Damascus which prompted his family’s previously unknown military wing to abduct several Syrians and a Turkish citizen to press the release of Hassan.
Another Turkish national has also been kidnapped but it was not clear who was behind his abduction.
