Army Command: Politicians Must End Fueling of Strife in Tripoli

The Army Command stressed on Wednesday that it had not withdrawn from the areas that witnessed clashes in the northern city of Tripoli, saying that it is implementing a complete military plan that will help confront those violating security.

It said in a statement: “Politicians, regardless of their affiliations and differences, must refrain from fueling strife in Tripoli and stop meddling in the developments in the city.”

“The political powers must assume their national responsibilities during this critical time,” it added.

The Army Command warned against attempts to create more tensions and exploit the regional situation “to settle internal scores that will harm all sides.”

The army is working against preventing Tripoli from becoming an open ground for regional disputes, stressed the statement.

It therefore announced that it is conducting “direct dialogue with the leaders of the armed groups, especially in the neighborhoods of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen.”

Clashes between the rival neighborhoods erupted on Monday over a personal dispute.

At least seven people have been killed and 70 wounded in the ongoing clashes.

A ceasefire has been announced on Wednesday and it should come into effect at 5:30 p.m.
