Army to Continue Cannabis Crops Destruction on Tuesday

The army is set to continue destroying cannabis fields in northern Bekaa despite the objection of the residents, who deem them as their only source to earn a decent living, An Nahar newspaper reported on Monday.

According to the daily, the destruction operations will proceed on Tuesday as the angered residents are reportedly seeking to hold a sit-in to criticize the silence of Hizbullah's chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah over the matter.

The newspaper reported that the leadership of Hizbullah and AMAL voiced their full support for the efforts exerted by the army to destroy the cannabis crops as they agreed on a time frame to hold an agreement with the heads of the objecting clans in the area.

Security forces and Lebanese army came under attack recently as they were destroying cannabis crops in the western and central Bekaa.

There are over 30,000 dunums of cannabis crops in the northern Bekaa.

The area for long has been reputed as a fertile ground for drugs. During the civil war, the drug trade thrived into a multi-billion dollar business.
