Miqati: Confronting Israeli Violations Mustn't Occur without National Consensus

Prime Minister Najib Miqati on Tuesday stressed that any retaliation to Israel's violations must enjoy “national consensus,” after Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah boasted Thursday that his group had sent a drone over Israel and noted that Hizbullah has the right to keep sending UAVs as long as Israel is violating Lebanon's airspace.

“The effectiveness of any Lebanese stance or military action in the face of Israel's violations … must not happen without national consensus, in terms of both the timing and the method,” Miqati said at the beginning of a cabinet session at the Grand Serail.

"A sophisticated reconnaissance aircraft was sent from Lebanese territory ... and traveled hundreds of kilometers (miles) over the sea before crossing enemy lines and into occupied Palestine," Nasrallah said in a televised address on Thursday.

"It overflew sensitive and important installations for dozens of kilometers until the enemy spotted it near (the nuclear site) Dimona," Nasrallah added. He did not identify the installations.

Miqati underlined that consensus "provides immunity for any stance, which would then reflect a unified Lebanese will."

"The national dialogue table is seeking to translate (this unified Lebanese will) through a national defense strategy," Miqati added.

The premier reiterated that “the Lebanese government is fully committed to (U.N. Security Council) Resolution 1701,” calling on the international community to “pressure Israel into respecting it and stopping its violation of Lebanese sovereignty.”

Separately, Miqati hoped “more (administrative) appointments will be made in the coming weeks and to fill all the vacancies before the end of the year.”

Turning to the issue of the recent escape of three Fatah al-Islam inmates from the Roumieh prison, Miqati said “what happened at the Roumieh prison is rejected and condemned and there will be no leniency with negligent and complicit officials.”

The premier also called for speeding up the judicial measures, after State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr referred two officers and 11 security personnel to a military investigation.
