Berri Rejects Govt. Resignation, But Will Accept 'What Lebanese Agree upon'

Speaker Nabih Berri criticized on Wednesday calls for the government to resign, warning of a political vacuum in Lebanon should such a step be taken.

He added however: “We reject the resignation of the government and political vacuum, but we will accept what the Lebanese agree upon.”

He made his remarks after his weekly meeting with lawmakers.

Moreover, the speaker asked: “What are the guarantees that a new government can be formed in the absence of national dialogue and should the current cabinet resign?”

The March 14-led opposition has been demanding the resignation of the government in light of the assassination Friday of Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau head Brigadier General Wissam al-Hasan.

The camp and Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat accused Syria of being behind the crime.

The March 14 General Secretariat said Wednesday that it will not relinquish its demand for the resignation of the government, which is dominated by Syrian allies, until it is fulfilled.

The camp also announced that it will no longer take part in the national dialogue sessions.
