Aoun: Miqati's Cabinet in Power 'Until Further Notice'

Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun reiterated on Tuesday that the government of Prime Minister Najib Miqati will remain in power “until further notice.”

“It is forbidden to shove the country into a vacuum,” Aoun told As Safir newspaper.

“The government will continue to work and increase productivity,” said Aoun, whose Change and Reform bloc has several ministers in the cabinet.

The FPM chief told As Safir that the March 14 opposition coalition has “exceeded all reasonable limits of logic” in its call for the formation of a new government following the Oct. 19 assassination of Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau chief Wissam al-Hasan.

“Why should the government go?” he wondered, saying “we are no longer affected by their indiscriminate accusations or their inflammatory statements.”

Aoun said he neither backs calls for the formation of a national unity cabinet nor a technocrat government.

The unity government would soon be “paralyzed under the weight of differences among its members,” he told As Safir.

“As for a proposal to form a neutral technocrat cabinet, that would be impractical … because there are neither neutral people nor real technocrats in Lebanon.”

But Aoun stressed that if a government change was unavoidable, then “the best thing would be the formation of a small cabinet that only includes the heads of parliamentary blocs.”
