Zasypkin: Hizbullah Adheres to Stability, Israeli Aggression on Lebanon Unlikely
Russian Ambassador to Lebanon Alexander Zasypkin hailed on Saturday Hizbullah's adherence to preserve Lebanon's stability, ruling out any possibility of an Israeli aggression on the country.
“In light of the current developments, I do not think that Israel would wage an aggression on Lebanon,” said Zasypkin in an interview to the As Safir daily.
On the political performance of Hizbullah, and the Ayoub drone sent by the party over Israeli territory in October, Zasypkin said “Hizbullah adheres to stability in Lebanon. However regarding the Ayoub drone, the most important thing is that all parties commit to resolution 1701.
“Sending the drone over Israeli territory is a breach for resolution 1701, but there are continuous Israeli breaches of this resolution. All parties should adhere to that U.N. decision.”
A Hizbullah drone was sent over Israeli airspace in October and was downed by Israel.
Zasypkin described relations with Hizbullah as “normal, ongoing and constructive.”
A Hizbullah delegation visited the Russian embassy early in 2012.
He reiterated support to Lebanon's stability and the dissociation policy adopted by the government which he described as “appropriate for the current phase.”
“It prevents the Syrian conflict from fanning out to Lebanon,” in light of the crisis that has been lingering on since March 2011, the diplomat told As Safir.
Zasypkin welcomed all efforts calling for dialogue among Lebanon's political powers, saying “We welcome all efforts for dialogue between internal parties in a bid to find a solution for problems. We praise efforts of President Michel Suleiman and anyone who follows the same approach in that regard.”
Nevertheless the ambassador commented on the March 14 alliance's call to overthrow the cabinet and its decision to boycott parliamentary and governmental activities.
He said: “A government change in Lebanon is an internal issue. March 14 has the right to set demands and choose tactical measures during this stage, but it is important that everything falls in the framework of the constitution.”
The March 14 opposition decided to boycott parliamentary activities and demand the cabinet's resignation following the assassination of Internal Security Forces Intelligence Branch chief Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hasan in October.
