Syrian Green Light Intensified Cabinet Formation Contacts

Syria has allegedly been behind the latest Hizbullah proposal to end the government formation impasse after the aides of the speaker and the Hizbullah leader met with Syrian officials in Damascus.

According to An Nahar daily, Syria gave the “password” to MP Ali Hassan Khalil and Hussein Khalil who returned to Beirut with new suggestions, including three possible names to head the interior ministry, which has been behind the three-month stalemate.

Syrian ambassador Ali Abdulkarim Ali also visited Baabda Palace Tuesday for talks with President Michel Suleiman. An Nahar said the talks between the two men was aimed at stressing Syria’s keenness on reaching a solution to the cabinet deadlock in which the Lebanese head of state has a say.

Media reports also said that a high-ranking Syrian official has been in direct contact with March 8 leaders to encourage them into speeding up the government formation process.

The reports came as Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblat plans to visit Damascus on Thursday.
