Jumblat Heads to Syria: Might Discuss Cabinet Formation with Syrian Officials

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid denied that he had information about the possible formation of the new government in the next 24 hours, hoping that the parties would speed up the process.

“We have to speed up the cabinet formation and to take into consideration the repercussions of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon and other issues,” Jumblat said in remarks published in newspapers on Thursday.

His remarks came as his envoys, caretaker Minister Ghazi al-Aridi held talks on Wednesday with Premier-designate Najib Miqati. While Caretaker Minister Wael Abu Faour met with President Michel Suleiman twice in less than 48 hours, before holding a meeting with Speaker Nabih Berri.

The PSP leader confirmed that he will head to Syria Thursday, and might discuss the government formation with the “Syrian leadership.”

“The relations with Syria are good. It offered a lot for Lebanon, defended the country and protected the resistance,” the Druze leader said.

He denied he had ties with the Syrian opposition. “The Syrian people look forward to the reforms that President Bashar Assad vowed to implement.”

Concerning the amendments carried out by STL Prosecutor Daniel Bellemare, Jumblat said that they can’t “affect the resistance because it’s immune,” reiterating that the court is “a political and not a justice tool.”
