SCC to Stage Strike on Wednesday: We Won't Stop until New Wage Scale is Referred to Parliament

The Syndicate Coordination Committee confirmed on Monday that it will carry on with its nation-wide strike on Wednesday as the new wage scale has not been released yet.

"We will keep on protesting every time the cabinet convenes,” the SCC said in a statement it released after its meeting at the headquarters of the Secondary School Education Teachers Association.

"Public administrations, ministries, the Grand Serail as well as public and private schools and vocational institutes, they will all participate in the strike,” the statement explained.

The SCC added that participants in the demonstration will march from al-Barbir square towards the Grand Serail.

"The cabinet bears the consequences of paralyzing the country,” the SCC commented after the cabinet had failed again in its meeting on Monday to refer the new wage scale to the parliament for vote.

The SCC had held several strikes to protest the cabinet's procrastination, accusing it of negligence over its failure to meet its demands.

However, the cabinet argues that it's delaying the issue to thoroughly discuss plans to boost the treasury's revenue to cover the expenses of the salaries boost.

The state treasury will have more than $1.2 billion to cover as there are over 180,000 public sector employees including military personnel.

Earlier this year, the cabinet approved the new salaries scale for public employees.

The wages increase will be retroactive from July 1, 2012.
