Police Officer Killed in Istanbul Public Square Shooting

A Turkish police officer was fatally shot and two people wounded in a crowded Istanbul square on Tuesday when at least two assailants opened fire, local television reported.

The broad-daylight assault saw attackers shoot at the officer as he was walking across the square in the Gaziosmanpasa district, the private NTV news network reported.

The officer later died in hospital. Two civilians were also wounded as they tried to help him.

Security forces captured one of the attackers, a woman who also carried a grenade in her pocket, while another fled the scene, NTV reported.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the assault, which was witnessed by dozens of horrified passers-by.

Several groups including leftist extremists, Islamists and Kurdish rebels regularly target Turkey's security forces.
