Connelly Meets Berri: U.S. Welcomes Efforts to Implement Electoral that Ensures Fair Elections

U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Maura Connelly hoped on Monday that the 2013 parliamentary elections would be held on time.

She reiterated that “the United States welcomes Lebanese efforts to implement an electoral law that would pave the way for free, fair and transparent elections.”

She made her statements after holding talks with Speaker Nabih Berri at Ain el-Tineh.

Connelly encouraged “Lebanon to uphold its democratic and constitutional principles and hold elections on time,” said the U.S. Embassy in a statement.

Talks between the ambassador and speaker also focused on the political and security situation in Lebanon and regional events, particularly in Syria.

Connelly renewed the commitment of the United States to a stable, sovereign and independent Lebanon.

The government approved in August an electoral law based on proportional representation and 13 districts.

The draft law was rejected by the March 14-led opposition, which deemed the law a being tailored to the March 8 camp.

The parliamentary subcommittee aimed at tackling the new law is set to convene on January 8 in order to resolve the dispute over the matter.
