LG Beats Rivals in Race to Sell New OLED TVs

LG Electronics says customers are pre-ordering big-screen TVs that offer sharper and clear images using advanced technology.

The South Korean company said Wednesday it will begin delivering the 55-inch OLED TVs next month for $10,335 in its home market.

TVs using OLEDs, short for organic light-emitting diodes, feature images with enhanced clarity and a sharper color contrast than liquid crystal display TVs. LG's OLED TVs are wafer-thin at 4 millimeters.

LG and rival Samsung Electronics touted OLEDs as the future display for next-generation TVs. But both have failed to deliver them to the market in the fourth quarter of 2012 as promised due to manufacturing challenges.

Sony and Panasonic announced a partnership last year to catch up with Korean rivals and jointly produce OLED panels for large televisions.
