Report: Meqdad Military Wing Spokesman Released on Bail

The spokesman of the military wing of the Meqdad clan has been released on bail, reported MTV on Friday.

It said that the General Prosecution agreed to released Maher al-Meqdad on a bail of L.L.15 million.

On Thursday, the Military Tribunal had approved a decision to release him, referring the matter to the General Prosecution.

Several other members of the family were arrested in September during raids on Beirut's southern suburbs and other areas.

The raids came after the clan went on an abduction spree of Syrians and Turkish nationals to avenge the kidnapping of family member Hassan al-Meqdad in Damascus in August.

The clan claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of more than 20 Syrians and a Turkish national.

Later on Friday, Military Tribunal Judge Imad al-Zein issued an indictment against Hussein Sobhi al-Meqdad, one of those arrested during the September raids, reported the National News Agency.

He charged him with forming an armed gang aimed at committing crimes against the people and carrying out terrorist activity.

He also charged him with the possession of arms and violent conduct against state security forces.

He has been referred to the permanent military court for trial.
