Roumieh Prison Inmate Commits Suicide
An inmate convicted of committing a “disgraceful crime” has hanged himself in Roumieh prison, the state-run National News Agency reported on Thursday.
Ghassan al-Sandaqli, who was in his 40s, committed suicide by hanging himself with a woolen scarf in the bathroom of Bloc B, NNA said.
The inmate had previously tried to kill himself twice during his stay at the prison's bloc D but he was transferred to bloc B where he was serving his sentence over the “disgraceful crime” that he had committed, NNA added in reference to a rape charge.
But Voice of Lebanon radio (93.3) quoted a prisoner as saying that al-Sandaqli died around 2:00 am by slashing his neck inside his cell.
The incident came after he threatened to commit suicide over arrangements made for his transfer to a prison in the northern city of Tripoli, VDL said.
