Lebanese Man Lightly Wounded in Syrian Cross-Border Fire

A Lebanese man was lightly injured from Syrian gunfire in the northern border town of Arida, the state-run National News Agency reported on Tuesday.

Ahmed Ahmed suffered a light injury in his hand from the Syrian bullets that reached his town in Akkar district overnight, the agency said.

Arida and the nearby towns of al-Noura and al-Dbabiyeh were also shelled by Syrian forces, NNA added.

Mortars and shells from the Syrian side regularly crash in Lebanon, causing several casualties. But Lebanese forces have never fired back despite promises of retaliation.

More dangerously, Syria's conflict has heightened deep rivalries and sectarian tensions in Lebanon, which is divided between pro-Syrian President Bashar Assad and anti-Assad factions, a legacy of the nearly three decades when Damascus all but ruled Lebanon, until 2005.
