Miqati, Safadi, Karami to Boycott June 8 Session to ‘Preserve Role of Institutions’

Premier-designate Najib Miqati, Caretaker Minister Mohammed Safadi and MP Ahmed Karami announced on Friday that they would boycott a parliamentary session on June 8.

The three officials said in a joint statement that they have decided not to attend the session “to preserve the role of institutions and out of their conviction not to widen the gap between the Lebanese.”

Their decision has dealt a blow to Speaker Nabih Berri’s efforts to hold the session to, in addition to other things, renew the mandate of Central Bank governor Riyad Salameh.

The statement also stressed on the importance of uniting all efforts to speed up the formation of the cabinet.

The March 8 and 14 forces are bickering over the constitutionality of such a session amid a caretaking cabinet. The March 14 coalition is accusing Berri of seeking to give it executive authorities.

Eyes are now turned to Walid Jumblat’s National Struggle Front. If the Druze leader decides to boycott the session, he would deal an additional blow to the speaker’s efforts and won’t guarantee a quorum.
