Families of Islamists Protest in Tripoli over Delay in Trials

The families of Islamist inmates detained in Roumieh Prison staged on Friday a sit-in in the northern city of Tripoli to protest the delay in the trial of their loved ones.

Speaking on behalf of the families, Sheikh Mohammed Ibrahim slammed the injustice against the prisoners, questioning the delay in the trial despite the construction of a proper courtroom at Roumieh.

“After five years of imprisonment and the construction of the courtroom, it turned out that a courtroom has been available at the Justice Palace in Beirut, which has been used to interrogate 21 Islamist inmates,” he noted.

He urged the judiciary to “fulfill its pledges after it held its preliminary interrogations of the Islamists.”

“It has become clear that the inmates held at Roumieh's Bloc B are innocent,” remarked Ibrahim.

A total of 84 Islamists have been interrogated over their links to the 2007 Nahr al-Bared Palestinian refugee camp clashes between the army and Fatah al-Islam militant group.

The arrested Islamists have been detained at Roumieh prison, Lebanon's largest jail.

The prison has witnessed riots and failed and successful jail breaks over the years, with inmates protesting the poor conditions and the delay in their trials.

In June 2012, nine Islamists, linked to the 2007 clashes, were released from Roumieh prison.
