Geagea: Elections Require Neutral Government
Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea congratulated on Sunday the Lebanese people on the occasion of Easter, saying that they received a “small gift” on the occasion which was the government's resignation.
He told Free Lebanon radio: “The elections should not be canceled and they require a neutral government that can ensure that they are held.”
This government should include economic experts who can address the poor economic situation in the country, he proposed.
He revealed that caretaker Prime Minister Najib Miqati may be named as premier-designate.
Geagea added that tensions in Lebanon will likely be eased given the government's resignation.
The cabinet resigned on March 22 after it failed to approve the formation of the authority to oversee the elections and agree on extending the term of former Internal Security Forces chief Ashraf Rifi, who handed the ISF leadership to Brigadier General Roger Salem on Saturday.
Rifi will turn 59 – the ISF’s maximum working age – on April 1. Salem will serve as acting head of the ISF until a new director general is appointed.
