Syria Says U.N. Should Class Nusra as Qaida-Linked

The regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad on Thursday called on the U.N. Security Council to class the jihadist Al-Nusra Front as an al-Qaida-linked group, state news agency SANA said.

In a letter to the United Nations, the Syrian foreign ministry said it "expects the Security Council to fulfill its role and preserve global security," the agency added.

"Syria has asked the U.N. Security Council to include Al-Nusra Front on its list of organizations linked to al-Qaida," said a statement referring to U.N. resolution 1267/1989 that set up the U.N. al-Qaida Sanctions Committee.

A sanctions regime was introduced by the U.N. to punish individuals and entities linked to al-Qaida, freezing their financial assets, banning them from travelling and imposing an embargo on arms destined for al-Qaida.

There are currently 64 entities and 227 individuals on the list.
