Suleiman Reiterates Call for Respecting Baabda Declaration

President Michel Suleiman on Sunday called on “everyone” to abide by the Baabda Declaration in order to keep Lebanon stable amid the regional turmoil.

“Lebanon -- which is abiding by the Baabda Declaration … and dissociating itself from the conflicts of others, especially in Syria – urges everyone to abide by the content of this declaration to keep the country stable and safe from the negative repercussions of the events taking place in the region,” the president said during a meeting with Arab youth and sports ministers in Baabda.

The Baabda Declaration was unanimously adopted during a national dialogue session in June 2012. It calls for Lebanon to disassociate itself from regional crises, most notably the one in Syria.

Suleiman noted that the Baabda Declaration can keep Lebanon “a meeting point for its brothers in the Arab world and for its friends in the world.”

The president told the ministers that their presence “reflects Arab unity and solidarity,” hoping “cooperation among Arabs will be activated at all levels and in all fields” and stressing “the importance of Arab integration in the age of globalization.”
