Paoli Calls on Lebanese to Agree on Disputes to Safeguard Country's Interests
French Ambassador to Lebanon Patrice Paoli called on the rival parties on Monday to reach consensus among each other as it is in the country's best interest, rejecting any interference claims in Lebanon's affairs.
“The government should be formed swiftly... It's a friendship message and not meddling (in Lebanon's affairs) as Lebanon should be united to confront all threats,” Paoli said in an interview with An Nahar newspaper.
Prime Minister-designate Tammam Salam's efforts to form a new government are ongoing.
He is seeking the formation of a cabinet of national interests that can stage the parliamentary elections.
The March 14 camp has meanwhile been demanding the formation of a neutral government, while its rival March 8 camp has been calling for the establishment of a political government.
Paoli also called on the March 14 and 8 alliances to find common ground over the controversial electoral law, considering it the “democratic and normal outlet to any country.”
The political powers have so far failed to reach an agreement on an alternative law, threatening to postpone the parliamentary elections that are scheduled for June 16.
The French diplomat expressed belief that the Lebanese are aware of all the regional challenges that they have to confront.
He called on the Lebanese foes to reach consensus under the auspices of President Michel Suleiman concerning all the controversial matters.
“Political vacuum isn't the solution,” Paoli pointed out.
He described Lebanon as a “special and dear friend.”
The diplomat also urged the Lebanese to abide by the dissociation policy, saying: “The conflict in Syria isn't a war between the Lebanese.”
“The Lebanese must exert efforts to prevent the turmoil in Syria from spilling over into their country,” Paoli said.
The Lebanese foes agreed during a national dialogue session in June 2012 to adopt the Baabda Declaration unanimously. It calls for Lebanon to disassociate itself from regional crises, most notably the one in Syria.
