March 14 Sources: Political Vacuum Aimed at Backing Syria at Security Level

High-ranking March 14 sources have said that the March 8 coalition backed by Hizbullah was seeking to keep the political vacuum in Lebanon in an effort to help the Syrian regime at the security level.

The sources have expressed fears that a decision to keep the vacuum was aimed at “keeping the freedom of movement on the ground in case the situation in Syria deteriorated to the level that requires a security support from Lebanon.”

The March 14 sources seemed to be referring to alleged support by Hizbullah fighters to the Syrian regime that is suppressing anti-government protests.

They told An Nahar daily published Sunday that “the coup carried out by Hizbullah with the support of Damascus against Caretaker Premier Saad Hariri’s cabinet has unveiled that it only wants to give PM-designate Najib Miqati the role of toppling the Hariri cabinet.”

“How would Hizbullah, which is considered a Shiite party, allow itself to meddle in the issue of the Sunni representation?” the sources wondered.

They were referring to Hizbullah’s demand to give Faisal Karami, who is a Sunni, a seat in Miqati’s cabinet.

The sources stressed that the March 8 forces can’t solve the country’s economic problems.
