Hungarian Official Inflation at Historic Low

Consumer prices in Hungary rose by 1.7 percent in April over 12 months, the lowest inflation rate since 1974, the national statistics office KSH said on Thursday.

The rate was down from a 2.2-percent in March.

KSH said that the fall was attributable to lower household energy costs, and consumer good prices. In addition, fuel prices rose 12 months ago but fell last month.

Hungary's right-wing government recently obliged energy distributors to carry the cost of a 10-percent cut in retail prices of gas, electricity and district heating from January 1.
