Aoun: FPM Will Not Boycott Elections

Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun stressed that his party is ready to run in the 2013 parliamentary elections, assuring that he rejects any boycott, the As Safir daily quoted him on Monday.

“The Free Patriotic Movement is ready to wage the elections and is not afraid of a confrontation,” the Change and Reform bloc chief said, adding “We reject to boycott the elections.”

“We have worked hard to reach consensus on an electoral law but in the end we were stabbed in the back,” he said.

He added that options to choose an electoral law have become limited and restricted to either extending the parliament's term or hold the elections based on the controversial 1960 law.

“They have failed an attempt to draft an electoral law that guarantees proper representation for all the Lebanese especially the Christians,” he added in reference to the Orthodox draft-law that failed to gain the approval of political parties.

Last week MP Alain Aoun of the FPM also stated that the movement will submit candidacies based on the 1960 law if an agreement over a new electoral law was not reached.

Remarks came ahead of an electoral subcommittee meeting at parliament that aimed at reaching an agreement over a new vote law.

Moreover, Caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel had explained in the weekend that given the failure of political blocs to reach an agreement on the said law, the one that was adopted during the previous elections, the 1960 law, would still be active and candidates would be eligible to submit their candidacies based on that.
