Geagea Says Hizbullah Exposed its True Nature, Part of Regional Scheme

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea slammed Hizbullah's involvement in the war raging in the neighboring country Syria, saying that the party exposed itself by proving that it doesn't care about the national interest.

“Hizbullah revealed that it's not a Lebanese party but a regional power that is taking party in a big scheme... The party doesn't take into consideration the nation's best interest,” Geagea told reporters in Meraab.

He pointed out that Hizbullah is a Lebanese party “in theory,” but in reality “it's an armed party that has experience and is connected to sizable strategies in the region.”

Geagea noted that Hizbullah's practices affect Lebanon, expecting that the party will pass through difficulties in the future due to its engagement in “adventures in Syria.”

He described the party as “Iranian.”

Hizbullah fighters spearheaded a devastating 17-day assault on the Syrian town of Qusayr near the Lebanese border which culminated last week with its recapture from the rebels.

The Christian leader said the Hizbullah and the Syrian regime are justifying their acts in the neighboring country by “saying they are waging a war on Takfiris and al-Nusra” rebel front.

Geagea said that Lebanon entered a “dangerous stage” due to Hizullah's endeavors, adding that the division in the country is on a national level and not a sectarian one.

Although Lebanon has officially adopted a position of neutrality in Syria's war, its people are sharply divided with Hizbullah and its allies backing President Bashar Assad's regime and the March 14 coalition supports the rebellion.

Syria's civil war has exacerbated sectarian tensions in Lebanon and its security situation has deteriorated due to various groups intervention in battles in the neighboring country.

Analysts recently warned that the foray into Syria's civil war by Hizbullah has fueled a Sunni-Shiite polarization that threatens to feed extremism on both sides and export the conflict to the wider region.
