Opposition to Centrists: Final Word of Syrian Policy Made by Aoun

High-ranking opposition sources shrugged off the latest statements made by the premier and the Progressive Socialist Party chief over the Free Patriotic Movement leader’s verbal attacks.

“The final word is made by Syrian policies which are expressed by (FPM chief Michel) Aoun,” the sources told An Nahar daily published Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Miqati voiced his surprise over Aoun’s recent verbal attacks on the Mustaqbal-led opposition, stressing that “it is unacceptable to cross the limits of courtesy and respect in our political discourse.”

As for PSP chief Walid Jumblat, he said the political forces participating in the cabinet should stay away from media debates, which aggravate tensions with the opposition.

The opposition sources told An Nahar, however, that they were not surprised by Aoun’s statements because he has been given the third of cabinet seats.

They criticized the “exaggerated” use of the word centrism by pro-government forces in an attempt to differentiate between the cabinet’s members.

The government’s centrist forces are President Michel Suleiman, Miqati and Jumblat.

High-ranking security sources have expressed fears that Aoun’s political rhetoric would lead to inter-Sunni clashes in Tripoli and Beirut. They said contacts are being made between Islamic leaderships to take the appropriate stance from “insults that not only target a person but an entire sect.”

Such contacts pushed Miqati and Jumblat towards issuing their statements, the sources said.
