Mufti al-Shaar Seeks to Garner Support for Large-scale Meeting on Tripoli Clashes

Tripoli Mufti Sheikh Malek al-Shaar said he invited Premier Najib Miqati to a large-scale meeting that is scheduled to be held at the Dar al-Fatwa on Friday to study the necessary steps to declare the northern city free from arms.

Al-Shaar told An Nahar daily published Tuesday that his visit to Miqati was aimed at congratulating him on the formation of the cabinet and inviting him to the conference that will bring together Tripoli’s ministers, current and former MPs from the north, heads of municipalities and syndicates.

“The premier told me that he doesn’t mind to attend but he would confirm his decision” on Wednesday, the Mufti said.

He told An Nahar that he discussed with Miqati demands to announce Tripoli an arms-free city, “particularly after the premier has approved such a request.”

Al-Shaar also telephoned Finance Minister Mohammed Safadi who hails from Tripoli.

The Mufti is hoping that Friday’s meeting would lead to the establishment of a leadership council for the north to contain any security incident that could erupt in Tripoli.

Seven people were killed in clashes between the residents of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen last Friday.
