Policy Statement Committee Discusses Economic Clauses without Tackling STL

The ministerial committee tasked with drafting the Policy Statement of the new government on Wednesday pursued its discussions and agreed on a host of clauses pertaining to the economic, financial and developmental policies.

The committee, however, did not tackle the controversial clause on the U.N.-backed Special Tribunal for Lebanon.

“This clause has not been discussed until now,” Information Minister Walid al-Daouq told reporters after the committee’s meeting at the Grand Serail.

Sources within the committee told LBC television that “the solution that will be adopted is to leave the STL clause to the national dialogue committee, given that it is a controversial issue among the Lebanese.”

MTV meanwhile said discussions are still revolving around the question of whether or not to mention the STL in the statement.

Daouq ruled out the possibility that the statement could be finalized on Thursday, noting that “several developmental and economic clauses are still pending.”

He also denied the existence of any dispute on any of the clauses, stressing that “the mood is very positive among all the members of the committee.”
